Food manufacturers are already trying in some cases to use regionally produced oils such as sunflower oil, and the trend among consumers is increasingly towards regional, organic and seasonal foods. One can only hope that the trend towards sustainability will remain sustainable.

Since Ferrero switched to palm oil, I have largely done without it because it just doesn’t taste as it used to. But most of them do not even notice the change in taste and shelf life. Consuming is probably more important to many than enjoying.

If you read the label “contain vegetable fats and oils”, you may associate it with properties such as “healthy” or “vegetarian”. But this apparent harmlessness is deceptive. Because in truth it is palm oil. And that is jointly responsible for the clearing of the rainforest and thus for the habitat destruction of animals, plants and indigenous people. Enjoy the meal.

Palm oil is obtained from the flesh of the oil palm fruit and is used in many areas of life: in food, in cosmetics, in diesel tanks and heating power stations as well as in cleaning agents. Whether frozen pizza or chocolate spread, whether lipstick or bio-fuel, candle wax or detergent – palm oil is found in around half of all supermarket products. Why? Because it is by far the cheapest vegetable oil in the world and, due to its chemical properties, it can be used for a long time and in many ways. Avoiding it is therefore as good as impossible, and a boycott only makes limited sense, because palm oil has a high yield per cultivated area – if other oils had to be used, even more area would be required.

And that would be fatal. Because countless millions of hectares of rainforest are already being cleared in Malaysia and Indonesia in order to make space for huge monocultures; With the extensive deforestation of tropical rainforests, habitats for many animal and plant species are gradually disappearing. But that’s not all. If orangutans, for example, move to the plantations in search of food, they will be killed. Up to 3,000 animals are killed every year around the world. But not only animals, but also people suffer from palm oil cultivation. Resident indigenous peoples are often stripped of their land and forced to migrate. If they fail to do so, they will be threatened, displaced or even arrested – not to mention the loss of biological diversity, natural disasters such as floods and droughts, water pollution through the use of pesticides, climate damage through the release of vast amounts of carbon dioxide and the collapse of the ecological balance.

As the criticism grew louder, the players in the palm oil industry were forced to act. Together with the WWF, they founded the “Round Table for Sustainable Palm Oil” (RSPO), a voluntary certification body that works or should work for sustainable and environmentally friendly palm oil production. Because, according to the environmentalists, this is simple greenwashing, in English “green dyeing”, a marketing method in which an environmentally conscious image is communicated but not lived. Organizations such as “Greenpeace” or “Rettet den Regenwald” accuse RSPO of fraudulent labeling on the grounds that their requirements are too weak and that no effective sanctions are provided in the event of abuse.
